Watching TV won't make you happy
These guys just totally missed the whole thing. Happiness doesn't come from TV, these people just watch TV to block out the nagging pains in their heart and minds which tell them that they aren't happy. They just have all the noise of the TV going, etc to block out all the painful thoughts. It's definitely not IT tho.
Unhappy People Watch Lots More TV
Unhappy people glue themselves to the television 30 percent more than happy people.
The finding, announced on Thursday, comes from a survey of nearly 30,000 American adults conducted between 1975 and 2006 as part of the General Social Survey.
While happy people reported watching an average of 19 hours of television per week, unhappy people reported 25 hours a week. The results held even after taking into account education, income, age and marital status.
In addition, happy individuals were more socially active, attended more religious services, voted more and read a newspaper more often than their less-chipper counterparts.
The researchers are not sure, though, whether unhappiness leads to more television-watching or more viewing leads to unhappiness.
In fact, people say they like watching television: Past research has shown that when people watch television they enjoy it. In these studies, participants reported that on a scale from 0 (dislike) to 10 (greatly enjoy), TV-watching was nearly an 8.
But perhaps the high from watching television doesn't last.
"These conflicting data suggest that TV may provide viewers with short-run pleasure, but at the expense of long-term malaise," said researcher John Robinson, a sociologist at the University of Maryland, College Park.
In this scenario, even the happiest campers could turn into Debbie-downers if they continue to stare at the boob-tube. The researchers suggest that over time, television-viewing could push out other activities that do have more lasting benefits. Exercise and sex come to mind, as do parties and other forms of socialization known to have psychological benefits.
Or, maybe television is simply a refuge for people who are already unhappy.
"TV is not judgmental nor difficult, so people with few social skills or resources for other activities can engage in it," Robinson and UM colleague Steven Martin write in the December issue of the journal Social Indicators Research.
They add, "Furthermore, chronic unhappiness can be socially and personally debilitating and can interfere with work and most social and personal activities, but even the unhappiest people can click a remote and be passively entertained by a TV."
The researchers say follow-up studies are needed to tease out the relationship between television and happiness.

Another road travelled
I'm still quite tired today, but much better than last night. Ah it's freezing!
Autumn is just around the corner.. it's hard to believe it's been a year since I went to China. Here's a blog with a picture of the funny clothes the Chinese have their babies wear: . Winter was just a week or two away from starting when I went there yesterday and there were these Chinese kids who were all bundled up and etc and their little buns were hanging out in the cold! :O

OMg. I'm going to die of cuteness.

Anyway, don't forget to watch your daily Ninjai Chapter

RIP
Big crowd farewells surfing pioneer Troy
Posted 4 hours 51 minutes ago
* Map: Nambour 4560
Mourners flew in from around Australia and the world to attend the funeral of one of Australia's most respected surfing identities, Peter Troy, on the Sunshine Coast today.
Hawaiian shirts and colourful prints were worn by almost everyone who turned out for Troy's funeral at Nambour.
The 70-year-old died from a blood clot last week at his home in Mudjimba.
There was standing room only, with an estimated 250 people attending the funeral.
The vice-president of the International Surfing Association, Alan Atkins, delivered the eulogy and says Troy was an icon.
"Peter sort of broke the new ground, rode the big waves. He was recognised as the founder of surfing in Europe and France and also in Peru," he said.
Friends are also planning a 'paddle out' to scatter the ashes at a future date.

Of Life and death
And whilst the ugly face of death shall rise, will I cry in fear? Or will I know, I have a friend so dear, so near, one call and he'll be at my side.
Cold wisps of loneliness touch me not, for the warmth of my love shall hold me tight. Leave me alone, alone, in the happiness of true life. Yet, forget me not, as I hold onto yours, so true, so naught.
I know two people who died this month. One died of lung cancer - he only found out he had cancer a couple weeks before he died.. and the other, was even more sudden- a heart attack. In just a snap... they're gone.
It's always heart wrenching for me to think of losing someone- to death. It's such a painful thing- it's like, I would rather just die myself than have to go through all that. I wouldn't know what's worse- having to leave everyone behind and being the only person, or being left behind by someone you love so much and live for. It makes me think of what is really important in life? At my death bed, what will be important to me? Will I have wished I spent more time playing? Eating? Exercising? Really tho.. it always makes me think, what should I be doing, what should I spend most of my time doing while I'm here in this world, while I'm alive, while I have the strength to do things and tell other people I care about them, and love them... there's so many things I could do.
Sometimes I wonder, how much of my time do I just use for myself, and how much do I actually use for others? Is it really such a bad thing if I were to use a few hours or a few minutes of my time to do something for other people who love me, or who need my help? Do I really have to react with such angst and ... who knows what kind of crap all the time? What the hell IS wrong with me? I live my life basically for myself. Does that make me happy? Ha, not much. I'm always happier when I get to do things for other people and make other people happy somehow. So what's the real deal? Where to go? What to do? Where will I go, and what will I do when I've died? I don't want to lie down for eternity, bored to death. (Pun unintended) There's got to be something better to live for, and die for, I'm sure of it.
Just thinking of losing my parents, my siblings and certain other people really crushes me. Now there's someone new in my life, and the thought of losing him to death is utterly heartbreaking. I don't see how other people can be so strong even when they've lost their very life already. I guess it's just like... it's so painful you can't feel anything anymore.
